Cocaine Worth $36M Seized in Frozen Berries Shipment

Australian authorities have intercepted approximately $36 million worth of cocaine concealed inside a shipping container of frozen berries from Chile. The Australian Border Force (ABF) identified suspicious packages within the refrigerated container at Port Botany on Wednesday, after it arrived from Santiago. The container was destined for northwest Sydney.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) subsequently seized 110 bricks of compressed white powder, each weighing one kilogram. Preliminary testing confirmed the substance was cocaine, with an estimated street value of around $36 million. Investigators are now seeking public assistance to identify the criminal syndicate behind the importation.

Law Enforcement Response

AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Aaron Burgess highlighted the growing trend of organised crime groups using refrigerated shipping containers to smuggle illicit drugs into Australia. “The community are our eyes and ears, and any information, however big or small, may help us identify those responsible for this failed importation,” he said.

ABF Acting Superintendent Noleen Shankar noted that cocaine seizures at Australia’s border have increased by 23 percent compared to the same period last year. “No matter the methods criminals use to try and hide illicit goods, the ABF and our law enforcement partners will continue to target the syndicates behind these activities and dismantle their operations,” he said.

Public Appeal

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The AFP and ABF remain vigilant in their efforts to combat drug smuggling and protect the community from the harms associated with illicit substances.
