WA Youth Tech Program Expands Across Regions with New Funding

A successful technology event for young people based in Mandurah is set to expand its reach across Western Australia, thanks to a significant funding boost. The GoSHowcase and GoHackathon programs, which have been engaging youth in the Peel region since 2023, will now extend to the South West and Mid West areas, providing more opportunities for kids to explore careers in tech and innovation.

Funding and Expansion Details

Disruptive Force, the organization behind the initiative, has secured a $105,180 grant from Lotterywest. This funding will enable the delivery of a series of GoShowcase events in the Peel, Mid West, and South West regions. The free two-day program combines hands-on experiences, showcases of emerging technologies, and a hackathon competition designed to build real-world skills.

GoSHowcase is an interactive experience tailored for children aged 10 to 17, featuring tech demonstrations, insights into future career pathways, and engaging hands-on activities. Meanwhile, the GoSHackathon involves mixed-aged teams developing solutions to real-world regional challenges, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Community and Political Support

Mandurah MLA Rhys Williams expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, noting that the program, which originated in Mandurah, continues to grow. "Events like this open doors, they show our kids what's possible, build confidence, and give them the chance to tackle real-world challenges in a hands-on way," Mr. Williams said. He added, "I've always been passionate about backing young people, and this is exactly the kind of opportunity that helps them build skills, think big, and see a future for themselves right here in Peel."

Michelle Wong, Chair of Disruptive Force, highlighted the impact of the funding, stating, "This funding has secured our event delivery across three regions as we continue to unearth and showcase the innovative talent of our regional young people." Dawesville MLA Lisa Munday praised the initiative for recognizing diverse talents, saying, "This kind of funding from Lotterywest for people to showcase their unconventional thinking and use their superpowers is wonderful... GoSH highlights that regional WA are the leaders of innovation."

Event Schedule and Impact

The Peel event is scheduled to run from August 28 to 29 at Mandurah Catholic College. The expansion aims to foster innovation and skill development among youth in regional areas, emphasizing the importance of technology and creative problem-solving in today's world.
