WA Police Ramp Up School Zone Patrols as New Term Begins

Western Australia Police have announced a significant statewide road safety operation aimed at protecting children and vulnerable road users as the 2026 school year commences. The initiative, which began on Monday, will see a heightened police presence around school crossings to target dangerous driving behaviours throughout the year.

Focus on High-Risk Periods and Behaviours

The operation is particularly focused on the first week of term when traffic volumes peak. Police will deploy a combination of marked vehicles, motorcycles, and speed cameras to monitor and enforce safe driving near educational institutions. Superintendent Glenn Spencer from the road policing command emphasised the shared responsibility of keeping children safe during their daily commutes.

"Keeping children safe on their way to and from school is a responsibility every driver shares," Superintendent Spencer stated. "Our officers will be out in numbers as students return, and motorists can expect to see highly visible patrols around school crossings right across the state."

Comprehensive Enforcement Strategy

Beyond targeting speeding, the operation will address various unsafe driving behaviours including distractions, seatbelt compliance, and proper use of child safety restraints like booster seats. Every stopped vehicle will undergo preliminary breath testing, with roadside drug testing also being intensified, especially in areas surrounding schools.

Superintendent Spencer highlighted the increased risks during high-traffic periods, urging motorists to exercise caution and reduce speeds in school zones. "We know the risks increase when traffic volumes are high, and that is why we will be targeting speeding, distraction and any behaviour that puts young people in danger," he explained. "This operation is about reminding the community that one poor decision behind the wheel can have devastating consequences."

Fremantle Bridge Closure Compounds Traffic Challenges

Adding to the traffic complexities, the Fremantle Traffic Bridge has been closed for essential maintenance work. The closure, which commenced on Monday morning, is expected to create significant congestion as commuters are diverted through alternative routes.

Long-Term Disruption Expected

Authorities are advising motorists to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, with the bridge potentially remaining closed for up to twelve months. This extended closure period will likely create ongoing challenges for Perth's traffic flow, particularly during peak commuting hours.

The combination of increased school zone patrols and major infrastructure maintenance creates a perfect storm for traffic management in Western Australia. Police are urging all road users to exercise patience, reduce speeds in school areas, and remain vigilant throughout this period of heightened activity on the state's roads.
