Residents and motorists in Towradgi will need to adjust their driving habits from next week, as a new school zone is established around the Wollongong Flexible Learning Centre. This proactive measure comes in response to safety concerns highlighted by three separate crashes occurring within a five-year period up to September 2024.
Details of the New 40km/h Speed Zone
The designated slow-down area will encompass the intersection of the Princes Highway and Towradgi Road, extending to include Caldwell Avenue and John Street. This strategic placement aims to protect students and families during peak travel times, particularly given the school's direct access to the busy Princes Highway on its western boundary.
Tailored Operating Hours for Enhanced Safety
Unlike standard school zones, the afternoon operational period has been specifically adjusted to align with the unique schedule of the flexible learning centre. The zone will be active during the typical morning hours of 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM, with afternoon enforcement from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. This customisation ensures that protection is provided when children are most likely to be present in significant numbers.

Wollongong MP Paul Scully emphasised the importance of this safety initiative, stating, "While these changes will add just a few seconds to motorists' travel times, they will importantly help protect children at times and places where they are often present in high numbers."
