A Geelong man's desperate attempt to evade police by scrambling through a drain and discarding illicit substances has culminated in multiple convictions in local court.
Joel Stoop, 30, faced the Geelong Magistrates' Court this week after his dramatic arrest earlier this year. The court heard how police attempted to intercept Stoop on Separation Street in North Geelong on February 24.
Instead of complying with officers, Stoop made a frantic dash for freedom, leading police on a chase through urban terrain.
The Desperate Escape Attempt
During his attempted escape, Stoop was captured on police body-worn camera desperately trying to dispose of evidence. Officers observed him discarding multiple small plastic bags containing a white crystalline substance.
His escape route took an unusual turn when he climbed into a drain pipe in what appeared to be a last-ditch effort to avoid capture. The dramatic scene unfolded as police pursued him through the drainage system.
Multiple Charges Laid
Stoop ultimately faced several serious charges including:
- Possession of a drug of dependence
- Hindering police
- Dealing with property suspected as proceeds of crime
- Committing an indictable offence while on bail
Magistrate Michael Coghlan convicted Stoop on all charges, delivering a stern message about the consequences of such actions.
Prior Offences Considered
The court took into account Stoop's previous criminal history, which includes prior convictions for weapons offences, theft, and driving matters. This history played a significant role in the court's sentencing considerations.
Stoop's lawyer acknowledged his client's troubled past but emphasised his recent efforts toward rehabilitation.
The conviction serves as another example of Geelong's ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime in the community. Local residents have expressed increasing concern about substance abuse issues in the region.
