A third teenage boy charged in connection with a violent stabbing incident that sent a Perth high school into lockdown has been released on bail by a Perth court.
Court Grants Bail to Third Accused Teen
The 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before the Perth Children's Court on Thursday. He is the third young person to be granted bail over the alleged attack that occurred at Ellenbrook Secondary College on the afternoon of Tuesday, 7 May 2024.
The court heard allegations that the incident involved a group of students and a weapon described as a knife. The altercation resulted in a 16-year-old boy sustaining stab wounds. The injured teenager was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
School Lockdown and Police Response
In response to the violent outbreak, school authorities immediately enacted a lockdown protocol to ensure the safety of other students and staff. Police were called to the scene on Main Street in Ellenbrook shortly after 3:20 PM.
Following their investigation, Western Australia Police charged three teenage boys with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm. All three accused are aged 15 and 16 years old. The first two boys were granted bail earlier in the week following their court appearances.
The conditions of the third boy's bail were not detailed in open court, but such releases typically involve strict requirements like curfews, reporting to police, and non-association with co-accused or witnesses.
Community and Educational Repercussions
The stabbing has sent shockwaves through the Ellenbrook community and raised serious concerns about safety within schools. The incident is now part of a broader conversation about youth violence in the state.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education confirmed that support services were being provided to students and staff affected by the traumatic event. Ellenbrook Secondary College has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment.
The legal proceedings for all three accused are ongoing. Their next court dates are expected to be scheduled in the coming weeks, where more details of the police case may be revealed.
This case continues to develop as authorities and the community grapple with the implications of such a serious act of violence occurring on school grounds.
