Cancer Cluster Probe: NSW Premier Orders Blakehurst High Health Audit
NSW Premier orders Blakehurst High health audit

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has taken direct action, ordering a comprehensive health audit of Blakehurst High School in Sydney's south following disturbing revelations of a potential cancer cluster among teaching staff.

Teachers Break Silence on Health Crisis

The investigation was triggered after several current and former teachers came forward with their stories, despite previously being instructed to remain silent about health concerns at the school. Deb Fabrizio, a science teacher who dedicated 14 years to the school, is currently battling breast cancer and describes being haunted by her time at Blakehurst High.

Fabrizio resigned in February after repeatedly raising concerns about multiple staff members falling seriously ill. Her predecessor as head science teacher, Linda O'Brien, passed away in 2023. "She was my best friend," Fabrizio revealed emotionally.

When questioned about how many teachers had received cancer diagnoses, Fabrizio disclosed: "We had, I don't know if I'm allowed to say this, but three head teachers in a row with breast cancer." Additional cases among staff members are understood to exist, though the exact number remains unconfirmed.

School Response and Asbestos Discovery

Fabrizio described the situation as being beyond coincidence. "It's either a cluster or it's extraordinarily bad luck. Like, you know, that's a curse level there," she stated.

The teacher also revealed that when she raised concerns about asbestos discovered on school grounds, staff were explicitly warned against speaking publicly. They were told: "We need to keep this within our community. It will be a code of conduct issue if this leaks." The asbestos has since been removed from the premises.

When asked if she felt ignored by authorities, Fabrizio responded unequivocally: "Oh, absolutely."

Government Intervention and Ongoing Investigation

The situation holds particular significance as the school sits within Premier Minns's own electorate. Chris Minns has personally committed to investigating the matter thoroughly.

"We're not going to leave any stone unturned. I've asked questions personally," the Premier assured the public.

Initial testing of the science facilities, including the storeroom, preparation room, break rooms, and science laboratories, has returned clear results. However, the investigation has now escalated with NSW Health launching an epidemiological study to examine patterns and potential causes of the illnesses.

Deb Fabrizio says she will no longer remain silent about the situation. "It's about speaking up at work so other people don't get hurt," she declared, emphasizing the importance of workplace safety and transparency.
