In a tragic development, human remains have been discovered on the New South Wales Mid North Coast, believed to be linked to the disappearance of an 18-year-old celebrating the end of his schooling.
Discovery Halts Extensive Search Operation
A member of the public made the grim discovery at Little Bay Beach in Arakoon around 7:30am on Friday. The individual immediately alerted police after spotting what appeared to be human remains on the shoreline.
The find comes after days of searching for Astin Gerstl, who vanished from the same beach on Sunday afternoon. The recent graduate was reportedly caught in a rip while in the water at approximately 4:30pm.
A Desperate Struggle in the Water
Witnesses to the incident reported seeing the teenager begin to struggle. Despite attempts by bystanders to reach him, Gerstl was dragged further out to sea by the strong current. The search, involving multiple emergency services, was suspended earlier this week after extensive efforts failed to locate him.
NSW Police have confirmed the remains have been taken for forensic examination. A report will be prepared for the coroner as the investigation continues.
Celebrating Schoolies Turns to Tragedy
Astin Gerstl had been on a one-week trip with friends, celebrating the end of his secondary education—a tradition known as Schoolies. He had recently completed his Year 12 exams at The King's School in Sydney's west.
Acting principal Stephen Edwards confirmed the young man's attendance at the prestigious private boarding school in a statement, expressing the community's deep sorrow.
The location of the tragedy, Little Bay Beach, is noted for its dangers. According to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the beach is not patrolled by surf lifesavers and is not recommended for swimming.
Community and Authorities Respond
The incident serves as a sombre reminder of the hidden dangers of unpatrolled beaches, particularly during the festive Schoolies period. Authorities are urging young people and all beachgoers to only swim at patrolled locations between the red and yellow flags.
The thoughts of the local community and the school are with the family and friends of Astin Gerstl during this profoundly difficult time.
