The Cairns District Court heard this week that the children, aged just five and seven at the time, were so terrified during the extended assault that they initially hid in another room. Despite their fear, both children eventually emerged to help their injured mother after the violent episode subsided.

Court proceedings revealed that the domestic violence incident occurred on October 10, 2022, at the family's Cairns residence. The attack began when the 34-year-old father, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the children, became enraged and launched what prosecutors described as an "extreme and prolonged" assault on the 31-year-old mother.
According to evidence presented to Judge Nathan Jarro, the violence escalated dramatically when the man grabbed the woman by her hair and dragged her through multiple rooms of the house.
