Mayfield Rooftop Stand-Off: Charges After Police Taser Incident

Mayfield Rooftop Stand-Off Ends with Taser Arrest and Court Charges

A 32-year-old man is set to appear in court on Wednesday following a tense rooftop stand-off with police in Mayfield, which culminated in the deployment of a Taser. The incident occurred as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of robberies in Hamilton, highlighting a complex web of alleged criminal activities.

Initial Robbery Incident at Hamilton South Unit

Emergency services were called to a unit on Fowler Street in Hamilton South around 8pm on January 30, responding to reports of a home invasion. According to NSW Police, a 44-year-old man was allegedly seriously assaulted and robbed by three men armed with a machete, an axe, and a mallet. As the victim fled the premises for his safety, it is alleged that the perpetrators stole a significant amount of cash and property. Paramedics assessed the man shortly after and transported him to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.

In response to this incident, Strike Force Arnstone was established to lead the investigation. Police have since charged two men in connection with the robbery:

  • A 28-year-old man was charged on February 9 with robbery armed with an offensive weapon. He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court on April 8.
  • Another 28-year-old man was arrested in Taree on February 19 after a brief foot pursuit in Wingham. He faces charges of robbery in company and is due to appear in Newcastle Local Court on March 16.

Second Assault on Beaumont Street

In a separate but related incident on Sunday, the same 44-year-old victim was allegedly riding an e-bike on Beaumont Street when he was struck by a vehicle around 6pm. Police report that he was then assaulted by a man who demanded his backpack, further complicating the investigation into the initial robbery.

Rooftop Stand-Off in Mayfield

As part of their inquiries, strike force detectives attended units on Hanbury Street in Mayfield at approximately 12.30pm on Monday. When they attempted to speak with a 32-year-old man at the location, it is alleged that he climbed onto the roof while armed with syringes. Tactical police and negotiators were called to the scene, leading to a stand-off that lasted several hours. The situation was resolved around 6.45pm when police used a Taser to arrest the man.

On Tuesday, the 32-year-old was formally charged with multiple offences, including:

  • Aggravated robbery with an offensive weapon
  • Stalk or intimidate with intent to cause fear of physical harm
  • Assault with intent to rob in company

He was refused bail and is scheduled to face Bail Division Court 2 on Wednesday. Additionally, police executed an outstanding warrant for alleged breach of bail, possession of a knife, and possession of a housebreaking implement.

Broader Context and Police Response

These incidents underscore ongoing challenges in addressing violent crime in the Newcastle region. The formation of Strike Force Arnstone reflects a coordinated effort by NSW Police to investigate and prosecute those involved in serious offences. The use of tactical units and negotiators in the Mayfield stand-off highlights the risks faced by law enforcement in such high-pressure situations.

As the cases progress through the courts, authorities continue to urge the public to report any relevant information to assist with investigations. The community remains vigilant as police work to ensure safety and justice in the wake of these alarming events.
