Man Charged with Bladed Weapon During Newcastle Knife-Scanning Operation

Police in Newcastle have charged a man after he was allegedly found carrying a bladed weapon and a small quantity of methamphetamine during a high-visibility knife-scanning blitz. The incident occurred on Ocean Street in Merewether just after 8am on April 1, as part of Operation Foil, a statewide initiative targeting violent offenders and weapon possession in public places.

Alleged Fleeing and Seizure of Items

Officers patrolling the area spotted a 41-year-old man walking along a footpath with a suspicious item. According to police reports, the man fled upon noticing the authorities but was later located near a unit block during a search. During the apprehension, police seized a bladed instrument and 0.22 grams of methamphetamine. The man has been issued a court attendance notice for possessing a prohibited drug and having custody of a knife in a public place. He is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court next month.

Operation Foil: Statewide Knife-Scanning Efforts

This arrest was part of Operation Foil, which ran on Wednesday and Thursday across New South Wales. The operation involved knife-scanning operations in 13 designated areas, including transport and shopping hubs such as Marketown in Newcastle West. In a separate incident on King Street in Newcastle West, police stopped a 32-year-old woman just after 2.30pm on April 1. During the stop, officers allegedly located and seized a small boxcutter. The woman was also issued a court attendance notice for having custody of a knife in a public place and is due to appear in court later this month.

Results of the Police Blitz

Operation Foil resulted in significant enforcement actions across cities and regional areas. Police conducted 2,789 knife scans using special hand-held wands, leading to the seizure of 100 weapons, including knives and firearms. Additionally, officers searched more than 1,000 people, made 215 drug detections, issued over 250 move-on directions, and executed 66 warrants. The operation culminated in more than 200 arrests and 400 charges laid. Newcastle and Lake Macquarie police have previously conducted similar knife-scanning operations at locations like Charlestown Square, the Glendale shopping hub, and Beaumont Street in Hamilton, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat knife-related crimes in the region.
