Man Arrested in Early Morning Raid Over Alleged Gym Arson and Car Fire

A 42-year-old man has been taken into custody following an early morning police raid at Salamander Bay, charged with multiple counts of arson linked to fires at a Newcastle gym and a vehicle. The arrest marks a significant development in an investigation that began after emergency services were called to the Air Locker gym in Wickham on two separate occasions in January.

Initial Incidents at Air Locker Gym

Emergency services first responded to reports of a blaze at the Air Locker gym on Albert Street in Wickham around 10pm on January 20. Upon arrival, police discovered the front door had been smashed, with minor damage noted in the lobby area of the building. Just three days later, on January 23, firefighters were again summoned to the same location after smoke was observed emanating from the structure.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked swiftly to extinguish the flames on the ground floor, but the second fire resulted in substantial damage to the property. In response to these incidents, Newcastle detectives established Strike Force Halesworth to conduct a thorough investigation into the arson attacks.

Discovery of Burning Vehicle and Police Appeal

As part of the ongoing probe, a vehicle believed to be connected to both gym fires was found ablaze in bushland at Salamander Bay on February 4, shortly after authorities had released CCTV footage and issued a public appeal for information regarding the car. Detectives also disseminated images of two individuals seen in the vicinity during the time of the second gym fire, seeking assistance from the community.

Arrest and Charges Following Raid

Extensive inquiries led police to execute a raid at a residence on Keel Street in Salamander Bay in the early hours of March 5. At the scene, detectives arrested the 42-year-old man, who was subsequently transported to Nelson Bay Police Station. He has been formally charged with three counts of damaging property by fire or explosion.

The accused arsonist remained in custody pending a court appearance later that day. Authorities have confirmed that investigations under Strike Force Halesworth are continuing, with further updates expected as the case progresses through the legal system.
