Dramatic police chase ends in crash and arrest
A 34-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly leading police on a dangerous pursuit that ended with a crash at Lake Macquarie on Sunday evening.
The incident began around 9pm on November 9 when officers patrolling Main Road at Speers Point noticed a vehicle driving without headlights and mounting the curb while negotiating a corner.
Failed attempt to stop sparks pursuit
Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver allegedly played a cat-and-mouse game, stopping briefly several times before accelerating away. This behaviour prompted officers to initiate a formal pursuit.
The chase was called off shortly after when police lost sight of the vehicle. However, officers continued patrolling the area and soon made a concerning discovery.
Collision and dramatic arrest
Police located the same vehicle on Morse Street at Speers Point, where it had collided with another car. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect appearing wet when apprehended, suggesting he might have attempted to escape through Lake Macquarie.
Following a search of the surrounding area, officers arrested the 34-year-old man near the crash scene.
The man was taken to Toronto Police Station where further investigations revealed he had allegedly been involved in a domestic violence-related incident earlier that same evening.
Multiple charges laid
The accused faces serious charges including:
- Two counts of contravening an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO)
- Two counts of stalking or intimidating
- Destroying or damaging property
- Police pursuit
The man was refused bail and appeared in court on Monday, November 10, where his release was formally denied. He is scheduled to face Toronto Local Court on Tuesday to answer to the charges.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges police face with dangerous driving behaviour and domestic violence in the Lake Macquarie region.
