Police Appeal for Bike Rider in Wollongong Cold Case Murder Investigation

Authorities in Wollongong are intensifying efforts to solve a cold case murder, urging a man seen riding a mountain bike to come forward with crucial information. The investigation centers on the fatal stabbing of Brandon Yates, a 28-year-old man who died from his wounds five days after an attack in August 2025.

Details of the Incident and Ongoing Investigation

Brandon Yates was stabbed in the chest around 3:20 am on August 17, 2025, near a block of units on Crown Street in Wollongong. Despite being rushed to hospital, he succumbed to his injuries on August 22. In the six months following his death, police and Yates' family have made repeated public appeals for information, but the case remains unsolved.

On February 24, 2026, police released a photo of a bicycle and details of a man they wish to speak to. According to a NSW Police spokesperson, a man wearing dark clothing was observed riding a silver Norco mountain bike north along Hector Street in Wollongong around the time of the stabbing. This individual is believed to potentially hold key insights that could crack the case.

Family Concerns and Police Theories

In November 2025, police released CCTV footage showing a person on a bike near the crime scene, also clad in dark attire. Wollongong Police District commander Superintendent Karen Cook stated that this man could assist with their inquiries. During the same appeal, Brandon's grandmother Rossilynne Yates and his sister Shantelle Yates expressed fears that he had been targeted, citing his kind nature and cognitive impairment as possible factors.

Shantelle Yates emotionally recounted, "People took advantage of him because he had the biggest and kindest heart out there. Knowing that someone would take my brother's life for nothing ... I have lost my brother, my best mate, losing my soul mate." Superintendent Cook declined to confirm if Yates was lured to the location but noted that his cognitive impairment might have influenced his decisions that night.

Strike Force and Call for Information

NSW Police have established Strike Force Alcalde to investigate the circumstances surrounding Brandon Yates' death. To date, the murder weapon has not been recovered. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Wollongong Police at 4226 7899 or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000. The community's assistance is vital in bringing closure to this tragic case and ensuring justice for Yates and his grieving family.
