WA Government Announces $1.45 Million Tourism Support Package After Cyclone Narelle

The Western Australian Government has announced a significant $1.45 million tourism support package to assist businesses still reeling from the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Narelle. Tourism Minister Reece Whitby is set to travel to Exmouth on Sunday to officially unveil the initiative, which includes one-off payments of up to $20,000 for eligible businesses.

Financial Assistance for Impacted Businesses

Under the new scheme, tourism operators can apply for financial relief based on their workforce size. Businesses employing under four workers are eligible for payments of up to $10,000, while those with four or more staff can receive up to $20,000. This targeted approach aims to address the varied needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.

Premier Roger Cook emphasized the urgency of the support, stating on Saturday, "We know tourism businesses relying on the busy Easter period have been hit particularly hard, and these payments will help keep them afloat." He urged Western Australians to visit the affected areas, highlighting that many businesses remain open and ready to welcome visitors.

Voucher Scheme to Boost Visitor Numbers

In addition to direct payments, the government will launch a voucher program offering 50 per cent discounts on selected tours and experiences. This initiative will be supported by marketing campaigns encouraging tourists to explore and support the Coral Coast region, which includes popular destinations like Exmouth, Shark Bay, Kalbarri, and Coral Bay.

Tourism Minister Reece Whitby explained, "Travellers are encouraged to keep or reschedule their bookings – rather than cancel – to support local businesses." He added that the package is designed to ensure businesses recover and regain the confidence needed to thrive again.

Road Reopenings and Regional Recovery

Cyclone Narelle severely impacted northern WA last month, virtually cutting off Exmouth from the rest of the state. However, recent progress has been made, with Main Roads announcing that parts of the Minilya-Exmouth Road are now open. This allows road trips from Perth to Exmouth via the North West Coastal Highway and Burkett Road, facilitating access for tourists during the school holidays and the upcoming ANZAC Day long weekend.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall confirmed that towns across the region, including Geraldton, Carnarvon, Onslow, and areas in the Kimberley, are open for business and eager to welcome visitors. The government's efforts extend beyond tourism, with additional support through the Premier's Natural Disaster Recovery Fund, providing up to $20,000 for residents whose homes were severely damaged or destroyed, and $10,000 for those with major damage.

Encouraging Community Support

Minister Whitby stressed the importance of continued government action, saying, "While it's encouraging to see towns reopening across the region, it's essential we continue doing everything we can as a Government to help impacted businesses get back on their feet." He described the Coral Coast as a world-class tourism destination and expressed hope that these measures would accelerate recovery and give visitors more reasons to return.

Applications for the tourism support payments, funded by Lotterywest, open today (Sunday). The government's message is clear: by booking holidays or visiting affected towns, the public can play a crucial role in supporting local operators and aiding the region's economic revival.
