Shellharbour Breakwall to Reopen After Major Safety Upgrades
The iconic Shellharbour breakwall, which has been closed to the public for over two years due to safety concerns, is now on track to be repaired and reopened soon. Located on Shellharbour North Beach opposite the Ocean Beach Hotel, this much-loved local landmark has been managed by NSW Maritime since its closure in 2014, when the ageing structure was deemed too dilapidated for public access.
Government Commits $4 Million for Restoration
The NSW Government has pledged a significant $4 million investment to fund essential repairs and upgrades to the breakwall. This funding will enable the structure to be safely reopened, allowing families and visitors to once again enjoy this picturesque coastal feature. The restoration project is not just about fixing the breakwall but also about enhancing its safety and accessibility for future generations.
Regional Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, "The Shellharbour breakwall is a much-loved local landmark, and we're making sure it can be safely reopened for the community to enjoy. This investment means we can preserve its heritage while making practical improvements to safety and access."
Key Upgrades and Construction Timeline
The planned upgrades include the installation of edge protection in areas where drops exceed one metre, as well as the creation of wider pathways to improve pedestrian flow. These modifications are designed to address the safety issues that led to the closure while maintaining the breakwall's historical integrity.
Construction work is expected to commence following the completion of a heritage study and detailed design works. This careful planning ensures that the repairs respect the site's cultural significance while implementing modern safety standards.
Community Advocacy and Local Support
Shellharbour MP Anna Watson has been a vocal advocate for the breakwall's restoration, persistently pushing for the necessary funding to carry out the repairs. Her efforts have been instrumental in securing the government's commitment to this project.
Ms. Watson expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, saying, "This is a practical investment in a valued community asset that locals have been calling for. It means families and visitors will be able to safely enjoy the breakwall again, while protecting an important piece of our local history."
The breakwall's reopening is eagerly anticipated by the local community, who have long cherished it as a scenic spot for walks, fishing, and family outings. Its restoration represents a significant win for heritage preservation and public infrastructure in the Illawarra region.
