The Coral Adventurer cruise ship has dropped anchor off Yorkeys Knob in Far North Queensland following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a passenger during a stop at the iconic Lizard Island.
Emergency services were called to the luxury vessel on Wednesday afternoon after reports a passenger had suffered a serious medical episode while the ship was visiting the world-renowned island destination.
Queensland Police confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, though foul play is not suspected. The passenger was reportedly receiving medical treatment aboard the ship when the incident occurred.
The Coral Adventurer, operated by Coral Expeditions, had been undertaking a voyage through the Great Barrier Reef when the tragedy unfolded. The ship subsequently altered its course toward Cairns, eventually anchoring off Yorkeys Knob, approximately 15 kilometres north of the Cairns CBD.
"This is a devastating situation for everyone involved, particularly the family and friends of the deceased," a spokesperson for the cruise operator stated. "Our immediate priority is supporting those affected and cooperating fully with authorities."
Investigation Underway
Queensland Police are preparing a report for the coroner as part of standard procedures for unexpected deaths. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has also been notified of the incident.
Lizard Island remains one of Queensland's most exclusive tourist destinations, known for its pristine beaches and luxury resort. The incident has cast a shadow over what is typically considered a paradise location for cruise passengers exploring the Great Barrier Reef.
The Coral Adventurer is scheduled to remain anchored off Yorkeys Knob while the investigation continues and arrangements are made for the disembarkation of passengers and crew affected by the tragedy.
