BlueFit to Operate Alkimos Aquatic Centre as $88m Project Advances

The City of Wanneroo has officially chosen an operator to manage the highly anticipated Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre as construction continues on the nearly $88 million community facility. This significant appointment marks a crucial milestone in the project's development timeline.

Operator Selection and Contract Details

Melbourne-based leisure and fitness company BlueFit Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to operate the centre on behalf of the City of Wanneroo. The five-year agreement is valued at $2,680,800 and represents a strategic partnership between the local government and an experienced leisure provider.

BlueFit, which was originally founded in Sydney in 2007, operates more than 50 facilities across Australia. Their portfolio includes notable venues such as the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre and the new WACA Pavilion aquatic and health centre, demonstrating their extensive experience in managing large-scale recreational facilities.

Council Decision and Community Impact

The selection of BlueFit as the operator was finalized during a special council meeting held on Monday night, following a comprehensive and competitive tender process. Wanneroo mayor Linda Aitken emphasized the importance of this appointment in preparing the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre for its upcoming opening.

"This is an exciting project for Alkimos and the wider community as our city continues to grow, and it's important the centre opens strong and continues to perform well into the future," Mayor Aitken stated. "We're pleased to work with BlueFit to support the successful establishment of the AARC and deliver the best outcome for the community."

Despite the operational contract with BlueFit, oversight of the centre will remain with the City of Wanneroo through ongoing contract management and performance monitoring systems.

Construction Progress and Facility Features

Construction on the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre commenced in January of last year and is progressing steadily. The project is scheduled for completion in October, with the official opening planned for November 2026.

Once finished, the centre will boast an impressive array of facilities including three indoor pools, an outdoor 50-metre pool, and multi-use indoor sports courts complete with spectator seating. Additional amenities will include a comprehensive gym and fitness suite, a health suite featuring a spa, sauna and steam room, as well as a creche, cafe and contemporary changerooms.

Funding Breakdown and Project Timeline

The $88 million project is being funded through a collaborative financial arrangement involving multiple levels of government. The Federal Government has contributed $30 million, the State Government has provided $12.6 million, and the City of Wanneroo has invested $45.3 million toward the development.

With construction expected to conclude in October and the centre scheduled to open in November 2026, the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre represents a significant infrastructure investment that will serve the growing northern suburbs community for years to come.
