Family secret to multi-generational business success revealed
Family secret to multi-generational business success

Keeping operations within the family has been the cornerstone of Advance Cabinet Works' enduring success, according to its managing director Darryl Bearzatto. The joinery manufacturer, established in 1956 by first-generation Italian migrant Ormonde Bearzatto, has grown from a niche Sunday morning chair repair service on Lygon Street into a purpose-built facility at University Hill, Bundoora.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation

Ormonde Bearzatto initially repaired broken chairs outside Lygon Street restaurants after busy weekend trade. He soon brought his three brothers into the business, and his wife managed the office. Today, Advance Cabinet Works blends traditional craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing technology, a combination that has fuelled its growth.

Multigenerational Workforce Creates Continuity

Darryl Bearzatto, who joined the business 37 years ago after a career as a commerce teacher, believes having multiple generations working together fosters a culture of continuity. His daughter Alana works in administration, while his sister's two sons, Mitchell and Jake, are also part of the operation. This multigenerational structure mirrors the company's 70-year relationship with Westpac.

Bearzatto credits Westpac's deep understanding of small and family-run businesses as a key factor in the partnership's longevity. The bank has supported Advance Cabinet Works through major milestones, including relocation to its current premises, vehicle and equipment financing, and evolving cashflow needs as the business modernised.

Overcoming Cashflow Challenges

A critical juncture came when the business faced cashflow pressure. Under standard criteria, the bank could not approve an increase in overdraft facilities. Bearzatto was considering other banks when Westpac proposed a solution. "Out of the blue, we got a phone call from Westpac. They said there's a way to do it and they did it for me," Bearzatto said. "I gave up hope but they didn't. That's loyalty. They really understand what the little guy is going through."

Backing Expansion and Modernisation

Westpac SME and small business managing director Anthony Matthews described Advance Cabinet Works as a great example of a multigenerational family business thinking long term. "Backing expansion and modern equipment helps businesses deliver more efficiently - saving time on the factory floor, lifting productivity and producing better outcomes for customers," he said. "When manufacturers invest in new machinery, the impact is immediate, and our role is to support that kind of practical growth so businesses like Advance Cabinet Works can keep expanding with confidence."
