Marrickville Business Devastated by $47,455 Camera Equipment Theft Involving Uber Driver
A camera rental business in Marrickville has suffered a significant financial blow, losing almost $50,000 worth of high-end camera equipment in a suspected theft by an Uber courier driver. The incident, which occurred on March 26, has left the local company reeling and sparked a police investigation.
Security Footage Captures Alleged Theft in Action
According to security footage obtained by 7NEWS, an Uber driver arrived at the Rentacam business in Marrickville to pick up film equipment destined for a production company in Mona Vale. This delivery method is standard practice in the industry for transporting valuable gear. However, after the equipment was loaded into the driver's vehicle, he allegedly drove off, cancelled the trip, and disappeared without a trace.
Peter Soltys, the owner of Rentacam, described the shocking moment: "A couple of seconds later, hey Peter, the job was cancelled, I'm sending another Uber. And we were like, what do you mean you're sending another Uber?" Inside the car was a camera, four lenses, and numerous other pieces of equipment, with a total value of $47,455.
Uber's Response and Ongoing Investigation
When Rentacam contacted Uber about the missing items, the company initially stated that the parcel had been collected by another driver, with both drivers denying possession. After security video was provided, Uber responded: "We're currently reviewing this internally and attempting to contact the delivery partner involved to clarify what happened and request the return of the item." Soltys expressed his frustration, saying, "I just don't get it. How can somebody just pick up something and just like, yeah, here we go, that's it."
Police Involvement and Financial Implications
CCTV footage allegedly shows the gear being loaded into the car, and vision of the driver's face, vehicle, and license plate was handed to police six days ago. Despite this, the suspect has not been located. If police are unable to track down the thief, the production company that leased the equipment will be liable for nearly $50,000 without ever using the gear. Soltys voiced concerns about the investigation's progress: "I don't know if they're looking for the guy or not. So we just, yeah."
This incident highlights vulnerabilities in courier services for high-value items and underscores the need for enhanced security measures in the rental industry. The business community in Marrickville is on alert as authorities continue their search for the missing equipment and the alleged perpetrator.
