The Greater Geelong council area has witnessed a significant uptick in corporate liquidations, with 13 companies entering the process in May alone. This marks a notable increase compared to previous months, reflecting broader economic challenges facing businesses in the region.
Construction Sector Hit Hardest
The construction industry bore the brunt of the liquidations, accounting for nearly half of the companies wound up. Among the notable names is Geelong Builders Pty Ltd, a firm that had been operating for over two decades. Other construction-related businesses include Coastal Constructions (Vic) Pty Ltd and Bellarine Building Services.
Industry insiders attribute the surge to rising material costs, labour shortages, and delayed payments from clients. "The construction sector is under immense pressure, and smaller firms are struggling to stay afloat," said a local industry analyst.
Hospitality and Retail Also Affected
The hospitality sector saw three businesses enter liquidation, including a popular restaurant in Geelong's CBD and a catering company. Retail was not spared, with two clothing stores and a homewares shop closing their doors permanently.
Geelong Chamber of Commerce president John Smith expressed concern: "These liquidations are a stark reminder of the tough trading conditions. We are urging local councils and state government to provide more support for small businesses."
Economic Pressures Mount
Experts point to a combination of factors driving the liquidations: inflation, rising interest rates, and reduced consumer spending. Dr. Emily Brown, an economist at Deakin University, noted: "Businesses that were already fragile are now tipping over. The cost of doing business has increased significantly, and many cannot absorb these shocks."
The liquidations list also includes a transport company, a printing business, and a consulting firm. Creditors are expected to face significant losses, with total liabilities estimated to exceed $10 million.
What This Means for Geelong
The wave of liquidations has raised concerns about job losses and the local economy's health. However, some remain optimistic. Sarah Jones, a business advisor, said: "While these closures are painful, they often pave the way for new businesses to emerge. Geelong has a resilient entrepreneurial spirit."
Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The Geelong City Council has announced a series of workshops aimed at helping businesses improve financial management and access support services.
