A beloved cafe in a quiet northern suburb of Perth is set to close its doors in just two weeks. After five years of serving the local community, Folk & Merchant in Doubleview will pour its last cup of coffee on May 24.
Owner's Announcement
Owner Laura Fletcher made the sad announcement on Monday, admitting that while she feels sadness about the closure, it is the right decision for her family.
“With a very heavy heart and mixed emotions, I’m announcing the last day of Folk & Merchant,” Mrs Fletcher said in a statement on Instagram. “It’s been five years, and an absolute privilege to serve such a beautiful community.”
Challenges of Running a Small Business
Mrs Fletcher explained that “the truth is, running Folk alongside a young family has taken its toll.” She expressed gratitude to the community that made the cafe so special and gave a special shoutout to the venue’s first employee, Raija.
Community Reaction
Customers of Folk shared their devastation in the comments, with one person saying Mrs Fletcher “created the perfect cafe.” Another commented, “Our absolute fave. So so sad but absolutely understand this tough decision,” while thanking Laura and the Folk team for making her feel so “welcomed, loved and supported” on her coffee run.
Fellow Cafe Owner's Perspective
Another local cafe owner said the decision was understandable and claimed more businesses will head for closure if they do not receive support. “This is so sad to hear ?and from another local cafe I 100% understand all of this,” Little T’s Cafe said. “This is where small businesses are heading if locals don’t support us and big businesses take everything. Councils, landlords and utilities are getting richer while we are squeezed. But Family comes first and you made a hard but right decision. All the best for whatever comes next ?”
