Farm Family Launches Region's First Egg Vending Machine

The Osborn family has introduced the region's first egg vending machine, located at the entrance to their property on Brush Farm Road in Raworth. This innovative venture allows customers to purchase fresh eggs directly from the farm at any time.

A Family-Run Operation

Sam Osborn, who runs the business Just Been Laid alongside her husband Brahm Osborn and their two children, explained that their hens are pastured, meaning they are happier and produce tastier eggs. The vending machine has been a great success since its installation at Easter, requiring refills twice a week.

“It’s going really well,” Mrs Osborn said. “It’s been really well received. People want to know where their food is coming from.”

Pastured Hens and Quality Eggs

The eggs come from hens that are pastured, sleeping in caravans and spending their days outdoors on the grass, living as “natural chooks,” according to Mrs Osborn. The concept for the vending machine originated about ten years ago when she encountered a similar setup in Queensland.

“I just love that convenience, and having real food available in a vending machine was something,” she said.

Specialized Machine Design

Mrs Osborn consulted several organisations before finding a team in Sydney capable of configuring a machine to handle egg cartons using an elevator system, preventing the eggs from dropping. “It’s kind of a novel thing,” she remarked.

The machine dispenses cartons of six or 12 eggs and is restocked a couple of times each week. In addition to the vending machine, Just Been Laid eggs are available through a subscription service, with pick-up points at various outlets, including coffee shops.

The Osborn family’s initiative provides a convenient way for locals to access fresh, ethically produced eggs while supporting a family business committed to transparency and quality.
