Keeping things in the family is the secret to Advance Cabinet Works’ success, according to managing director Darryl Bearzatto. The joinery manufacturer, founded in 1956 by first-generation Italian migrant Ormonde Bearzatto, has grown from a small chair-repair operation into a modern facility at University Hill, Bundoora.
From chair repairs to a thriving business
Ormonde Bearzatto spotted a quirky niche in the market by repairing broken chairs outside Lygon Street restaurants on Sunday mornings after a busy night’s trade. He soon brought his three brothers into the business, and his wife joined as office manager. Today, Advance Cabinet Works combines traditional craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing technology.
Managing director Darryl Bearzatto, Ormonde’s son, joined the business 37 years ago after a career as a commerce teacher. His daughter Alana works in administration, and his sister’s two sons, Mitchell and Jake, are also part of the operation. This multigenerational structure creates a culture of continuity, Bearzatto believes.
Longstanding partnership with Westpac
The business’ multigenerational structure mirrors its 70-year relationship with Westpac. Bearzatto credits Westpac’s deep understanding of small and family-run businesses as a key factor in the partnership’s longevity. Westpac supported the business through major milestones, including relocation to its current premises, vehicle and equipment financing, and evolving cashflow needs as the business modernised.
A critical juncture came when the business faced cashflow pressure. Under standard criteria, the bank couldn’t approve an increase in overdraft facilities. Bearzatto was looking at other banks when Westpac came up with a solution.
“Out of the blue, we got a phone call from Westpac. They said there’s a way to do it and they did it for me,” Bearzatto said. “I gave up hope but they didn’t. That’s loyalty. They really understand what the little guy is going through.”
Supporting growth with modern equipment
Westpac SME and small business managing director Anthony Matthews believes Advance Cabinet Works is a great example of a multigenerational family business thinking long term. “Backing expansion and modern equipment helps businesses deliver more efficiently - saving time on the factory floor, lifting productivity and producing better outcomes for customers,” he said. “When manufacturers invest in new machinery, the impact is immediate, and our role is to support that kind of practical growth so businesses like Advance Cabinet Works can keep expanding with confidence.”
The team at Advance Cabinet Works Victoria continues to build on its legacy, blending tradition with innovation to serve customers for generations to come.
