Perth's backyard pool boom is experiencing a massive surge, but industry experts are issuing a stark warning: chasing the so-called "feel-good woke" trend could leave homeowners financially drowning in unexpected expenses. With more than 178,000 private pools already scattered across Western Australia and approximately 17 per cent of Perth homes featuring a pool or spa, the classic Aussie backyard has evolved into a significant status symbol as well as a summer essential.
The Reality Behind Instagram-Perfect Pools
Behind the glossy, Instagram-perfect plunge pools and popular "wellness" trends, insiders from the pool industry reveal that many homeowners are buying into hype rather than practical reality. Brett Blair, the boss of Jim's Pool Care, highlighted that there are over 1.4 million pools nationwide, with Australians installing up to 25,000 new pools each year. Often, these installations occur without a proper understanding of what is required to keep them clean and functional.
"People invest tens of thousands of dollars installing a pool but fail to realise that the system they choose fundamentally determines how much time and money they will spend on ongoing maintenance," Mr Blair emphasised. This is precisely where the much-touted "woke" pool movement faces a harsh reality check.
Luxury Pools and Hidden Expenses
The housing boom has fueled a rise in luxury mineral and magnesium pools across Perth backyards. These pools are heavily marketed as healthier, softer, and more "natural" options, contributing to their booming popularity. However, according to Mr Blair, these pools still rely on chlorine to remain safe; they are merely dressed up with fancy branding and come with a heftier price tag.
"These pools might feel great, but they come with higher installation costs and ongoing mineral replacement expenses," he explained. "The irony is that the fewer chemicals people desire, the more expensive and complex the system becomes."
Comparing Pool Systems: Costs and Convenience
At the opposite end of the spectrum, traditional chlorine pools—often dismissed as harsh or outdated—remain the cheapest and most effective option available, albeit requiring more hands-on maintenance from homeowners. Saltwater systems, which sit comfortably in the middle, are wildly popular across Western Australia because they automate chlorine production and strike a sensible balance between cost and convenience.
The overarching message from industry experts is blunt and clear: not every trendy pool system is worth following. "If you want something simple and affordable, it is best to stick with proven, reliable systems," Mr Blair advised. "Chasing the latest 'wellness' trend can easily turn what should be a rewarding lifestyle investment into a constant, costly headache."
