Comedian and television presenter Andy Lee is urging Australians to make a small change to their shopping habits that could have a massive impact on the nation's economy and employment. As the ambassador for Australian Made Week in 2026, Lee is championing the 'swap your shop' challenge, which encourages households to spend an additional $20 per week on products bearing the green-and-gold kangaroo logo.
The $20 challenge
According to new research from Roy Morgan, if every Australian household redirected just $20 of their weekly spending to Australian Made products, it would inject an extra $11 billion into the economy each year and create nearly 20,000 new jobs. Lee, who humorously notes his 53% mark in Marco Economics at university, says his own research supports these figures.
"I'm a huge advocate for Aussie businesses, innovators and entrepreneurs, so I'm super proud to be drawing attention to the tangible as well as 'feel good' benefits of buying local," Lee said.
Why buy Australian?
Lee emphasised that Australian products are known worldwide for their high standards in craftsmanship, safety and sustainability. "We have such an immense pool of talented and hardworking people on home soil who we need to support and celebrate," he added. The challenge is simple: when buying everyday items like groceries, household goods and clothing, take a few extra seconds to look for the certified Australian Made logo.
Lee also highlighted that he and his business partners have made a conscious decision to support Australian products because they lead the world in quality and safety standards.
Join the movement
Australian Made Week in 2026 is pushing the $20 'swap your shop' challenge, but Lee hopes Australians will continue to support local makers and growers all year round. "Every Aussie wins when we buy local," he said.
Australian Made is a partner of Back Australia, a campaign that encourages Australians to support local businesses and communities. Lee encourages everyone to take up the challenge and show their love for Australian-made products.
