Marmota Launches Major Drill Program to Unlock 2km Gold Trend in SA
Marmota Drills 20,000m to Extend Gold Trend in South Australia

Marmota Commences Extensive Drilling Campaign in South Australian Gold Project

Marmota Limited has initiated a significant 20,000-metre reverse circulation drill program at its Greenewood gold discovery, located within the company's Gawler Craton gold project in South Australia. This ambitious maiden program, which began drilling yesterday, is designed to aggressively pursue a substantial strike extension along the Greenewood-Mainwood gold system, potentially linking two key prospect areas over a continuous 2km-long mineralised trend.

Connecting High-Grade Gold Zones Across the Gawler Craton

The company is now actively drilling an estimated 220 holes as part of this program, with the primary objective of significantly extending known gold mineralisation. Marmota has effectively connected the dots between its evolving, high-grade gold mineralisation at Greenewood and historic one-metre gold assays at the Mainwood prospect, situated 2km to the southwest. Historical data from Mainwood, which includes hits within a broad zone of elevated gold ranging from 5 to 20 parts per billion identified through calcrete sampling, extends northeast along the strike directly towards Greenewood.

Marmota's analysis suggests that potentially economic gold mineralisation has a strong likelihood of being proven along this entire trend through systematic drilling between the two target zones. This exploration effort is driven by the exceptional results already achieved at Greenewood, which has delivered some of the most impressive gold hits in the Gawler Craton since the 1995 Challenger gold discovery, located just 30km southwest.

Spectacular Assay Results and Strategic Drilling Objectives

In late February, Marmota released a second batch of standout assays from its initial Greenewood drilling, revealing a near-continuous, high-grade system that remains open in all directions. Notable results include:

  • 44 metres assaying 2.3 grams per tonne (g/t) gold from 16m downhole, including 4m at 16g/t gold.
  • 36m grading 3g/t gold from 64m, featuring 4m at 18g/t gold.
  • 4m running at a remarkable 24g/t gold within a broader stretch of 32m at 3.2g/t gold from 56m.

According to Marmota Limited chairman Dr Colin Rose, the drill program serves two primary roles: to continue expanding the main Greenewood zone, which has yielded spectacular results and remains open, and to vigorously attack the southern Mainwood zone with its maiden drilling program there. This marks the first time Mainwood has seen a drill rig since 2018, following historical reverse circulation drilling that totalled only 3700m across 53 holes, averaging about 70m deep, indicating ample opportunity for modern, systematic exploration.

Geographic and Joint Venture Context

Greenewood and Mainwood are positioned 35 kilometres northwest of Marmota's flagship Aurora Tank gold deposit and 30 kilometres northeast of the historic Challenger gold mine, which produced over a million ounces of gold in its peak. These prospects form part of Marmota's Golden Moon joint venture, where Marmota holds a 90 per cent interest through its wholly owned subsidiary, Half Moon Pty Ltd.

The Mainwood zone was originally identified using regional calcrete sampling, a traditional technique that also led to the Challenger discovery and other gold deposits across the broader Gawler Craton project. Intriguingly, Marmota notes that Greenewood itself lacks a surface calcrete expression, highlighting the potential for additional gold discoveries in areas where conventional calcrete sampling may not have been effective.

Future Prospects and Exploration Strategy

Approximately 70 per cent of the planned holes are focused on the Mainwood extension along the northeast strike towards Greenewood, while the remaining 30 per cent are allocated to Greenewood. These holes aim to tighten coverage, probe for new extensions, and fill gaps in the current drilling. With a two-kilometre-long potentially high-grade gold trend in its sights and numerous substantial, high-grade Greenewood intercepts already recorded, Mainwood could emerge as the next major development for Marmota.

The logic behind exploring this southwest trend from Greenewood towards Mainwood is both sound and well-founded. If drilling confirms strong gold prospectivity between the two zones, the next critical question will be how far this trend extends northeast of Greenewood and southwest of Mainwood. Should drilling yield positive gold hits along the trend, investors can anticipate a steady stream of updates as the program progresses over the coming months.
