Major roadworks on William Hovell Drive in the Australian Capital Territory are set to commence from Monday, leading to significant closures as part of a $107 million upgrade project. The initiative, aimed at enhancing safety and traffic efficiency, will see the road reduced to a single lane in each direction during construction hours.
Details of the Closures
The closures will affect the section between Coulter Drive and the Tuggeranong Parkway, with work scheduled to take place from 7am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to 4pm on weekends. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time or seek alternative routes to avoid delays. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
Improvements Planned
The upgrade includes widening the road to four lanes, installing new traffic signals at key intersections, and constructing a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians. These changes are designed to reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users, particularly during peak hours.
ACT Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel, emphasised the importance of the project. "This upgrade will not only improve travel times but also make the road safer for the thousands of Canberrans who use it daily," he said. "We appreciate the patience of residents and commuters during these essential works."
Local businesses and residents have been notified of the closures, and signage will be in place to guide traffic. The ACT government has also committed to minimising disruptions where possible, including scheduling major works outside of holiday periods.
For those affected, alternative routes include using Coulter Drive, the Tuggeranong Parkway, or local roads. Real-time traffic updates will be available via the ACT Government's website and social media channels.
