ADX Energy Uncovers Dual Oil and Gas Bonanza in Austrian Discovery
ADX Energy Finds Double Prize in Austrian Oil and Gas Field

Perth-based ADX Energy has unveiled a significant dual-prize appraisal opportunity at its flagship Welchau discovery in Upper Austria, following new technical studies that reveal both an updip light oil target and a shallower-than-expected gas-condensate accumulation within a connected petroleum system.

Technical Breakthrough in Austrian Energy Exploration

The technical update comes after a comprehensive integration of drilling, pressure, and structural data from the Welchau 1 well, combined with records from the nearby historic Molln 1 gas-condensate discovery. A revised seismic interpretation and extensive surface mapping supported these integrated findings, significantly enhancing ADX's understanding of the Welchau anticline geometry and revealing new appraisal options that were not apparent before drilling commenced.

Light Oil Discovery at the Crest

At the core of this update is the identification of a light oil accumulation approximately 500 metres updip from the Welchau 1 well, positioned at the crest of the Welchau anticline. This high-quality light oil, accompanied by gas, represents a far more lucrative opportunity compared to ADX's initial gas-heavy interpretation, potentially transforming the economic viability of the project.

Gas-Condensate Resources at Shallower Depths

In parallel, updated pressure and structural analyses have demonstrated pressure continuity and aquifer communication between Welchau 1 and the downdip Molln 1 discovery, which successfully flow-tested gas condensate in the late 1980s. This permeability connection strongly suggests the existence of a large, overpressured, and regionally extensive petroleum system, with gas-condensate resources now thought to be contained at a shallower structural setting than previously anticipated.

Resource Estimates and Appraisal Pathways

ADX estimates aggregated mean prospective resources of an impressive 18 million barrels of oil for the updip light oil target and 125 billion cubic feet of gas updip of Molln 1, based on probability analysis. Notably, these estimates do not include additional gas duplex structures identified in the updated structural model, leaving further upside potential on the table.

The company has outlined multiple appraisal pathways to capitalise on these discoveries. Welchau 1 will be flow-tested in the coming weeks to verify the presence of movable oil within the field's top Reifling Formation. If necessary, the well will then be deepened to appraise the central duplex structure updip of the Molln 1 gas-condensate discovery, or sidetracked westwards to assess the updip light-oil potential.

Strategic Significance and Geological Context

ADX Energy executive chairman Ian Tchacos emphasised the strategic importance of these findings, noting that the studies substantiate the presence of a significant light oil and gas discovery in the Welchau anticline, where Welchau-1 is interpreted to be interconnected with the historic Molln 1 discovery. The shallower structural setting of the potential gas condensate resources, assessed to be in pressure communication with the Molln-1 well, adds to the project's appeal.

Welchau sits within the Triassic Steinalm Limestone reservoir, part of the Northern Calcareous Alps hydrocarbon fairway—a proven petroleum province with multiple stacked reservoir targets and robust regional sealing. ADX's updated structural model indicates that a duplex thrust system lies directly beneath Welchau 1, aligning updip with gas-condensate-bearing compartments intersected at Molln 1.

Positioning for European Energy Opportunities

With testing imminent and multiple appraisal pathways now defined, ADX is positioning Welchau as a strategically significant European oil and gas opportunity. The ability to target both oil and gas resources from an existing well provides flexibility, capital efficiency, and clear near-term catalysts as the company works to convert technical promise into commercial outcomes.

This discovery highlights the ongoing potential for energy exploration in established regions like Austria, offering a promising development for ADX Energy and its stakeholders in the competitive global energy market.
