Perth Named Australia's Top City for Tradespeople with High Pay and Strong Demand
Perth Crowned Best City for Tradies in Australia

Perth Emerges as Australia's Premier Hub for Tradespeople

Perth has been officially crowned the best city in Australia for tradespeople, with builders, plumbers, and HVAC specialists earning more money and securing more jobs than anywhere else in the nation. A comprehensive report by business management firm Fergus identified Perth as the most secure and lucrative location for tradies, based on an in-depth analysis of demand, earnings, and market stability across the industry.

Dominant Performance Across Key Trade Categories

Perth ranked first nationally for plumbers, builders, and HVAC specialists, and secured second place for electricians. It stands out as the only Australian capital city to feature in the top five across every major trade category, underscoring its exceptional position in the trades sector.

The plumbing industry shines particularly bright in Perth's economic landscape. Local plumbing businesses handle an average of 92.5 jobs annually, achieving an impressive 49.2 per cent quote-to-job win rate. With median weekly earnings reaching $2162 and revenue growth at 23.7 per cent, the sector is supported by a substantial 23.1 per cent employment growth rate over the past five years.

Thriving Builders and HVAC Specialists

Builders and HVAC specialists are also experiencing significant success in Perth. Builders manage an average of 46 jobs per year per business, while HVAC businesses handle approximately 119 jobs annually. Builders earn a median weekly income of $1995, and HVAC specialists lead with $2320 per week, reflecting strong demand, stable market conditions, and solid profitability in both sectors.

Anthony Vella, 58, director of Velco Plumbing and Gas, expressed little surprise at Perth's top ranking. "I'm not really surprised Perth came out on top after working in the eastern states before moving to Perth," Mr Vella said. "The weather, the people, and the whole vibe of Perth are great." He highlighted the city's rapid expansion as a key driver of increased work opportunities, noting that supply and demand for housing, coupled with population growth, create a robust market for plumbers.

Economic Drivers and Quality of Life

Scott Van Ryt, owner of Leak Detection in O'Connor, pointed to the mining sector as a crucial factor in Perth's strong market for plumbers. "I would say the money flowing into the city from the mining sector is the key factor that makes Perth such a strong market for plumbers right now," Mr Van Ryt explained. He emphasized the abundance of opportunities across all plumbing sectors and praised the balance between high pay and quality of life.

"I think it's really impressive that we've been named the best place in Australia to be a tradie, however, it's not surprising; the city is growing rapidly and is a beautiful place to live," he added. "Working in Perth is great due to the number of opportunities. We are always busy and that hasn't changed much . . . we have consistent work hours which allows for a great work life balance. Plumbers are paid very fairly at the moment."

Flexibility and Lifestyle Advantages

The flexibility of the Western Australian market enables tradespeople to transition between metropolitan residential projects and high-yield regional assignments. Daniel Vella-Prowse, 35, an employee at Velco Plumbing and Gas, has benefited from this dynamic. "My experience working as a plumber in Perth and regional WA like the Pilbara and Kimberly certainly backs up to being the best place in Australia for tradies," Mr Vella-Prowse said.

He highlighted Perth's unique appeal, stating, "Perth is different to other states as Perth has given me the opportunity to work FIFO, then return to Perth to start a family. The outdoor lifestyle and great weather are a bonus . . . we plan to stay in Perth long-term because of lifestyle, weather and family."

Strong Performance in Electrical Sector

Perth also excels in the electrical trade, ranking second nationally. Local electrical businesses manage an average of 260 jobs per year, with a 53.5 per cent quote-to-job win rate and employment growth of 17.1 per cent. The sector demonstrates low seasonal volatility at just 0.33 per cent and features a 55 per cent owner-manager share, offering a blend of stability and opportunity for both established operators and new entrants.

This comprehensive report solidifies Perth's reputation as the ultimate destination for tradespeople in Australia, combining economic prosperity with an enviable lifestyle.
