Incident Details
Upon arrival, officers discovered that a safe containing a .22 calibre Omark rifle had been stolen from the home. The safe was later found abandoned in a nearby street, with the rifle still inside. Police launched an investigation and, following inquiries, arrested a 31-year-old man at a home in Mayfield on Wednesday afternoon.
Charges Laid
The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence, and larceny. He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday. Police will allege in court that the man broke into the home and stole the rifle safe.
Police Appeal to Gun Owners
Detective Acting Inspector John Watson of Newcastle City Police District said the incident serves as a reminder for gun owners to ensure their firearms are stored securely. “This is a timely reminder for all licensed firearm owners to ensure their weapons are stored in accordance with the law,” he said. “We will continue to target those who seek to unlawfully obtain firearms.”
The recovery of the rifle is a positive outcome, and police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
