Canberra police have used a GPS key ring to crack the mystery of a car stolen on Anzac Day, leading to the arrest of a suspect. The incident, which occurred during the early hours of the public holiday, had left authorities baffled until the tracking device provided crucial evidence.
The Theft
The vehicle was reported stolen from a home in the Canberra suburb of Gungahlin around 2am on Anzac Day. The owner had left the keys inside the car, which was parked in the driveway. The thief took advantage of the opportunity and drove off unnoticed.
Police launched an investigation but initially had few leads. However, the owner had a hidden GPS key ring attached to the keychain, which was still with the keys. The device allowed the owner to track the vehicle's movements in real time.
Tracking the Suspect
The GPS data showed the car had been driven to several locations across Canberra, including a shopping centre and a residential street. Police used this information to narrow down the search area. The tracking continued for several hours until the vehicle was located parked in the suburb of Franklin.
Officers attended the scene and observed a man near the car. When they approached, the man attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. The 25-year-old suspect from Ngunnawal was charged with motor vehicle theft and other related offences.
