Australian parents have been drawn into a major global product safety alert after food giant Nestle announced a recall of specific baby formula products over contamination concerns. The company revealed that certain batches of its Alfamino Infant Formula may contain a toxin that can cause food poisoning.
Details of the Affected Products
The recall involves 400-gram tins of Alfamino Infant Formula, which is manufactured in Switzerland for infants aged up to 12 months. The product has been sold in pharmacies, hospitals, and through online retailers across the nation.
Nestle Australia has identified the affected batches by their use-by dates and batch codes, which are printed on the bottom of the containers. Parents and carers are urged to immediately check for the following details:
- Use by date 17.04.2027, Batch number 51070017Y2
- Use by date 18.04.2027, Batch number 51080017Y1
- Use by date 28.05.2027, Batch number 51480017Y3
- Use by date 29.05.2027, Batch number 51490017Y1
- Use by date 22.07.2027, Batch number 52030017Y1
Reason for the Precautionary Recall
The company stated the recall is a precautionary measure due to the potential presence of the toxin cereulide. This toxin is produced by certain bacteria and can lead to symptoms of foodborne illness.
"The safety of infants is our top priority and we apologise for any concern this may cause," said Michael Edde, General Manager of Nestle Health Science in Australia. "This recall is a precautionary measure, in line with our strict product quality and safety protocols."
Nestle indicated the issue is believed to be linked to an ingredient supplied for the formula. Consumption of cereulide can trigger vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea.
What Parents Need to Do
Parents who have purchased any of the listed products must stop feeding it to their child immediately. They should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Anyone concerned about their baby's health after consuming the formula should seek medical advice without delay. This Australian action follows recent recalls of some SMA and BEBA baby formula products by Nestle in Europe and South America, a move that reportedly affected at least 25 international markets.
