Geelong Fuel Prices Hold Steady, Offering Christmas Relief to Drivers
Geelong Fuel Prices Hold Firm Over Christmas

Motorists in Geelong have been granted a welcome Christmas gift, with local fuel prices holding firm and providing a period of much-needed relief at the bowser. In a positive turn for household budgets during the expensive festive season, the cost of unleaded petrol has remained relatively stable, avoiding the sharp spikes often seen during holiday periods.

A Festive Reprieve for the Hip Pocket

According to the latest data from RACV's fuel watch service, the average price for unleaded petrol (ULP) in Geelong was sitting at 193.9 cents per litre as of Thursday. This figure represents a manageable level for drivers, especially when compared to the more volatile prices in metropolitan Melbourne. The stability is a marked contrast to the typical pre-holiday price cycles, offering a financial breather for families travelling to visit loved ones or embarking on summer road trips.

RACV's Senior Manager of Vehicle Engineering, Michael Case, confirmed the favourable situation for Geelong residents. "Geelong prices are remaining relatively stable," Mr. Case stated, highlighting the advantage local drivers currently hold. He pointed out that while Melbourne prices were fluctuating between 195 and 219 cents per litre, Geelong's rates were consistently sitting at the lower end of that scale. This regional stability is a key factor in the current affordability.

How Geelong Compares to Melbourne and Regional Victoria

The price disparity between Geelong and Melbourne is significant. During the same period, Melbourne's average ULP price was recorded at 209.2 cents per litre, making fuel in the state's capital over 15 cents per litre more expensive on average. This gap underscores the value for Geelong-based drivers and those planning to fill up before heading towards the city.

Looking across broader regional Victoria, Geelong's position remains competitive. Key regional centres reported the following average prices:

  • Ballarat: 191.9 cents per litre
  • Bendigo: 190.5 cents per litre
  • Shepparton: 191.1 cents per litre

While these inland centres are slightly cheaper, Geelong's prices are remarkably close, considering transportation and logistical factors. The city's rates are also far more favourable than those in some other regional locations, such as Sale, where the average was 202.3 cents per litre.

Expert Advice for Finding the Best Deal

Despite the overall stability, price variations between individual service stations in Geelong still exist. Michael Case from RACV emphasised the importance of shopping around. "We always encourage motorists to use fuel price comparison tools and apps to find the best deal in their area," he advised. A quick check of these resources can reveal differences of several cents per litre between retailers, leading to substantial savings on a full tank.

The current price stability is attributed to a combination of factors, including steady international oil prices and refined petrol supply. However, experts caution that this period of relief may be temporary. Fuel price cycles are notoriously unpredictable, and external global events can quickly influence the local market. Drivers are encouraged to make the most of the current situation while remaining vigilant for any changes.

For now, the steady fuel prices in Geelong stand as a small but significant win for consumers. In a time of year associated with increased spending on gifts, food, and entertainment, not having to worry about soaring petrol costs provides genuine budgetary relief and a less stressful start to the summer holidays for countless local drivers and families.
