Contractors preparing a home for demolition in Kiama Downs had a shocking discovery when they found explosives stashed inside the property. The incident occurred on Monday, May 18, on North Kiama Drive, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Discovery of Explosives
Todd Latemore from Country and Coast Demolition said his team was clearing out the house when they came across four canisters filled with railway detonators in the garage. 'We've identified some explosives in the garage before removing house contents,' Mr Latemore said. 'We've moved them from one corner to the other ... I was a bit cautious of it, definitely nervous because I was thinking about my hand blowing off.' He added that they handled the canisters very softly and delicately before placing them in a corner to await the bomb technician and clearance.
Emergency Response
Police and Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to the scene at 8.16am. The home was evacuated, and an exclusion zone was established. Mr Latemore noted that he had never seen anything like that before, only detonators in underground mines. Joel Baillie, also from Country and Coast Demolition, described the property as a 'hoarder's house.' A Sydney Trains contractor arrived at about 9.45am to collect the canisters from the house.
The Mercury has contacted NSW Police for further comment. The incident highlights the dangers that can arise during demolition work, especially when unexpected hazardous materials are present.
