Qantas has significantly bolstered its fly-in fly-out (FIFO) network in Western Australia, securing three brand-new aircraft and announcing a suite of cabin improvements for resource sector workers. The national carrier confirmed the expansion, which underscores its commitment to the state's crucial mining and resources industry.
New Aircraft for WA Skies
The airline will introduce three additional Airbus A220 jets specifically for its FIFO operations based in Perth. These modern, fuel-efficient aircraft are part of Qantas's broader fleet renewal strategy. The first of these new planes is scheduled to commence operations in late 2025, with the remaining two arriving in 2026.
This investment increases Qantas's total order for the A220 model to 29 aircraft. The A220 is noted for its superior range and economics on thin regional routes, making it an ideal fit for the vast distances covered by FIFO services in Western Australia.
Major Cabin Upgrades for Workers
Alongside the new aircraft, Qantas revealed a comprehensive refresh of the cabin interiors for its FIFO fleet. The upgrades are designed to enhance comfort for workers travelling to and from remote sites.
The new cabin design will feature:
- New Recaro slimline seats offering increased personal space and comfort.
- Panoramic windows that are 50% larger than standard, providing more natural light and better views.
- Increased overhead locker space to accommodate carry-on luggage.
- Advanced air filtration systems and improved cabin lighting to reduce jet lag.
These enhancements apply to the new A220s and will also be retrofitted across the existing QantasLink Boeing 717 fleet used on FIFO routes, with the refurbishment program set to begin next year.
Confidence in the Resources Sector
The substantial investment in both new aircraft and cabin products signals Qantas's strong confidence in the long-term future of Western Australia's resources sector. FIFO services are a vital lifeline for the industry, transporting thousands of workers to remote mining, oil, and gas projects across the state.
Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson stated that the expansion is a direct response to growing demand from resource company clients. She emphasised that providing a better travel experience for FIFO workers, who are often on long and demanding swing rotations, is a key priority for the airline.
The move also strengthens Qantas's competitive position in the WA FIFO market, ensuring it can continue to offer a modern and reliable service to its corporate clients. The new A220s will replace older, less efficient aircraft, leading to a reduction in fuel burn and carbon emissions by up to 25% per seat on equivalent routes.
This fleet announcement is a positive development for Western Australia's economy, supporting aviation jobs in Perth and ensuring the state's critical resources industry remains connected with a modern and efficient air service.
