Train services on Perth's Mandurah line have resumed after a serious crash on the Kwinana Freeway caused widespread delays and cancellations on Thursday afternoon. The crash, involving a car and a truck, occurred around 1pm just south of the North Lake and Armadale Road interchange, damaging rail infrastructure in the freeway median.
Southbound traffic on the Kwinana Freeway was heavily congested for almost eight kilometres, coming to a standstill through Jandakot and Cockburn. The Mandurah line was suspended in both directions for several hours, with replacement buses running between Elizabeth Quay and Aubin Grove, though long queues formed at some stops.
Just before 6pm, Transperth announced that Mandurah line services had resumed between Elizabeth Quay and Rockingham, though not operating to the usual timetable. The Thornlie-Cockburn Line also experienced a brief suspension but has since resumed normal operations.
The crash also caused delays on the Yanchep line further north. Main Roads WA confirmed the crash scene was cleared by about 5pm, but train services remained impacted. The driver of the car, a woman in her 60s, escaped with non-life-threatening injuries.
Vision from a news helicopter showed significant resources at the scene, with the inner lane of the freeway blocked off. The white car was extensively damaged, and a large set of wheels became detached from the truck, which was carrying a trailer loaded with boxes. The damage to the rail lines brought more than 10 workers to the area, and power lines above the tracks appeared to have been damaged.
The service disruptions affected travel to the AC/DC concert at Perth Stadium on Thursday night. Transperth advised passengers to allow extra travel time and check for updates.
