A man has been airlifted to hospital after being trapped in his vehicle following a serious single-vehicle crash on the Kuranda Range Road, west of Cairns, on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene near the Kuranda Lookout just before 2:30 PM, where they found a car that had left the road and crashed into trees. The male driver, believed to be in his 30s, was trapped inside the wreckage.
Fire and Rescue Service crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to extricate the man from the vehicle. He was treated at the scene by paramedics for multiple injuries, including suspected leg and chest trauma.
The Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the man was in a stable condition when he was flown to Cairns Hospital via the LifeFlight rescue helicopter. The flight took approximately 10 minutes.
The Kuranda Range Road was closed for several hours while police and forensic officers investigated the crash. Diversions were in place for motorists travelling between Cairns and the Tablelands.
Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. The cause of the crash is yet to be determined, but initial inquiries suggest speed may have been a factor.
The man remains in hospital in a stable condition, with further updates expected as his condition is assessed.
