Cathay Pacific's 80th Anniversary Celebrations Take Flight with Artistic Flair
Cathay Pacific, the renowned Hong Kong-based airline, is marking a significant milestone in 2026 as it celebrates its 80th anniversary with a vibrant display of creativity and heritage. The airline's special anniversary aircraft, named The Spirit of Hong Kong, made a notable stop in Sydney on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, echoing its historic roots. This visit commemorates Cathay's inaugural flight from Sydney to Hong Kong shortly after its founding in 1946, a journey initiated by former war pilots Roy Farrell and Sydney de Kantzow, who saw an opportunity to transport goods to postwar China using a Douglas DC-3 aircraft nicknamed Betsy.
A Collaborative Masterpiece in the Skies
The livery adorning The Spirit of Hong Kong is the result of a dynamic partnership between Cathay Pacific and the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA). Unveiled in March 2026, this artistic design blends WestK's "Where Art Comes Alive" branding with Cathay's "Move Beyond" ethos, which focuses on delivering elevated customer experiences. According to a Cathay spokesperson, this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to supporting local cultural creativity and elevating Hong Kong's arts and culture on the global stage. The livery serves as a visual testament to both parties' long-term dedication to advancing the development of Hong Kong's arts, culture, and creative industries.
Honoring Heritage While Embracing the Future
Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam emphasized the airline's dual approach to its anniversary celebrations. He stated, "For eight decades, Cathay has grown alongside Hong Kong. As we mark 80 Years Together with our home city, we are honoring our heritage with the return of our classic 'lettuce leaf sandwich' livery on our Airbus A350 and Boeing 747 aircraft, while also embracing the future with a vibrant modern art livery on our Boeing 777-300ER aircraft." Lam further highlighted the partnership with WKCDA, noting that through The Spirit of Hong Kong livery, Cathay aims to support outstanding local artistic creativity and showcase the unique culture and spirit of Hong Kong to audiences worldwide. Additionally, he mentioned Cathay's substantial investment of over $18 billion (HK$100 billion) into its fleet, cabin products, lounges, and digital innovation, reinforcing its goal to strengthen Hong Kong's status as a leading international aviation hub.
West Kowloon Cultural District: A Hub of Artistic Excellence
The West Kowloon Cultural District, or WestK, is an ambitious 40-hectare cultural hub located alongside Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong. It features a diverse mix of arts and cultural facilities, including world-class museums such as M+ and the Hong Kong Palace Museum, as well as performing arts venues like the Xiqu Centre and Freespace. The district also boasts an 11-hectare Art Park, providing green spaces for public enjoyment. Annually, WestK hosts more than 1,000 exhibitions, performances, programs, and events, attracting over 10 million visitors, making it a pivotal center for cultural engagement and creativity in the region.
This anniversary initiative by Cathay Pacific not only celebrates its rich history but also positions the airline as a key player in promoting cultural exchange and innovation. As The Spirit of Hong Kong continues its journey, it symbolizes a bridge between past achievements and future aspirations, moving forward together with the city, customers, and team.
