A tragic shark attack has claimed the life of a man off the coast of Western Australia's south coast.

Incident Details

The attack occurred just before 11:30 AM on Saturday, approximately 10 metres off the shore of Michaelmas Island in King George Sound. The island is situated about 13 kilometres from the coastal town of Albany.

Victim and Circumstances

According to Western Australia Police, the victim was a 35-year-old man who was spearfishing with family members near Michaelmas Island when he was attacked by a shark. The man was brought back to shore by boat, where paramedics from St John Ambulance WA met him. Despite their efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

WA Police have confirmed they will prepare a report for the coroner to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Official Response

WA Police released a statement saying, "A 35-year-old man was spearfishing with family off Michaelmas Island when he was attacked by a shark. He was conveyed back to shore by boat where he was met by SJA WA paramedics. Sadly, he was unable to be revived. WA Police will prepare a report for the coroner."

Authorities have not yet identified the species of shark involved in the attack. The area remains open, but swimmers and spearfishers are urged to exercise caution.
