A deep low pressure system and associated cold front have brought a deluge of rain and strong winds to Western Australia, with the worst conditions expected on Saturday. Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Sarah Scully warned of potential thunderstorms, stating, 'This deep low pressure system and associated cold front will bring wet and windy weather — and even a risk of a gusty thunderstorm.'
Rainfall Totals Across WA
Overnight rainfall has been significant across the Perth metropolitan area and the South West. Bickley in the Perth Hills recorded 23.2mm, while Dwellingup, south-east of Perth, saw a staggering 40mm. Manjimup, a popular tourist destination, received 26.6mm. The heavy downpours are expected to continue through the weekend.
Wind Warnings and Gusts
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a marine wind warning for areas between Geraldton and Esperance, with winds anticipated to reach 60kmh and gusts up to 120kmh. A gale force warning is in effect for the Albany coastline, where wind speeds may approach 87kmh. Main Roads WA has urged motorists to exercise caution, advising, 'Be aware of minor flooding across metro roads and drive to the conditions.'
Outlook and Safety Advice
The cold front is expected to pass by Sunday, but rain will persist over Perth until at least Thursday. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has provided safety advice, including seeking shelter away from trees and power lines, staying indoors, unplugging electrical appliances, and avoiding flooded drains and waterways. Residents are advised to stay alert for hazards such as fallen power lines and loose debris.
