UOW Pledges Executive Transparency Shift Under New Leadership

University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Lu has committed to embedding transparency in executive decision-making as part of a new 'values in action' initiative. The program aims to guide the university's operations and staff conduct, with honesty, transparency, and authenticity listed as core principles.

Professor Lu stated that the values apply to all levels of the organisation, including governance, addressing long-standing staff criticism over poor transparency during recent restructuring and job cuts. The university has faced over 200 job losses and program reductions, leading to calls for greater openness from leadership.

At a December parliamentary inquiry into the higher education sector, allegations emerged that major decisions by the University Council and its committees were not made transparently. Professor Lu acknowledged that past issues contributed to instability and difficult times, and that rebuilding trust is a priority.

He emphasised that the values project must be put into practice to be meaningful, with leadership setting the example. The initiative is part of a broader effort to rebuild culture and trust following a period of transformation and restructuring at UOW.
