The University of Newcastle has announced plans for a new 450-bed student accommodation building at its Callaghan campus. The eight-storey structure is estimated to cost more than $128 million and will offer a mix of single studios and shared apartments.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky confirmed that a Regional Significant Development Application (RSDA) has been submitted to the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel. He stated that the development aims to meet ongoing demand for safe and secure housing while fostering community and serving as a central hub for campus life.
The building will feature common areas including a games room, study spaces, a mini-cinema, a multi-media games room, a music room, and a dining area. Accommodation options will range from individual studios to six-bedroom apartments.
As part of the project, a semi-paved carpark and surrounding vegetation will be removed, but a new parking lot will be built on the opposite side of Ring Road. The building will include storage for 66 bikes, with an additional 36 casual bike spots for visitors. At its highest point, the building will reach approximately 30 metres.
The university conducted an engagement survey earlier this year, receiving 30 responses and one phone enquiry about potential parking spillover onto residential streets. The university noted that the planned extra parking would address this concern. The RSDA is now open for public exhibition for 14 days, allowing community feedback.
The development is targeting a five-star certified green rating. Pending approval, construction is forecast to begin in 2026.
