Michelle Zajko, a 33-year-old member of the so-called Zizian cult, has been formally charged with second-degree murder in the death of a man in Vermont in 2022, prosecutors announced Thursday.
The Charges and Arrest
Zajko was arrested in Vermont on Wednesday and appeared in court Thursday. She is accused of killing 72-year-old Richard Zajko, who is believed to be her father-in-law, at his home in the town of Springfield. The charge carries a potential sentence of 20 years to life in prison.
According to the Vermont State Police, officers found Richard Zajko dead from a gunshot wound on October 13, 2022. The investigation remained open for nearly four years before leading to Michelle Zajko.
Background on the Zizian Cult
The Zizian cult, also known as the Zizian group, is a small, secretive religious sect founded by a woman named Ziz. The group has been linked to several violent incidents and deaths across the United States. Members are known to adopt pseudonyms and live in communal settings, often shunning modern technology.
Authorities have described the group as having a hierarchical structure with a charismatic leader. The cult has been under scrutiny since a string of suspicious deaths and disappearances in recent years.
Prosecution's Statement
“This arrest is the result of a long and thorough investigation,” said Vermont Attorney General Sarah George in a statement. “We believe Michelle Zajko acted in concert with other members of the Zizian group to carry out this killing. The evidence points to a coordinated effort to silence a perceived threat.”
George declined to provide further details about the motive or other potential suspects, citing the ongoing investigation.
Legal Proceedings
Zajko is being held without bail pending a hearing scheduled for next week. Her public defender declined to comment on the case. The prosecution has indicated that additional charges may be filed against other individuals connected to the cult.
Court documents reveal that police used cell phone records and witness testimony to link Zajko to the crime scene. A firearm matching the caliber used in the killing was recovered from a location associated with the cult.
Wider Investigation
The Zizian cult has been linked to at least four other deaths across the country, including a double homicide in Pennsylvania in 2023. Federal authorities have launched a task force to investigate the group's activities. The FBI has urged anyone with information to come forward.
“We are dealing with a dangerous organization that has shown a willingness to use violence to achieve its goals,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael Driscoll. “Our investigation is ongoing, and we are committed to bringing all responsible parties to justice.”
Impact on Local Community
The small town of Springfield has been shaken by the case. “It's terrifying to think that a cult could be operating in our midst,” said resident Mary Johnson. “We hope the authorities can get to the bottom of this and keep us safe.”
Local officials have increased police patrols and are working with state and federal agencies to monitor any cult activity in the area.
