Federal agents kill man at Memphis motel in fourth taskforce shooting

Federal agents shot and killed a man at a Memphis motel Wednesday morning during a Drug Enforcement Administration operation with the Memphis Safe Task Force, marking the fourth officer-involved death since the anticrime initiative launched in September. The taskforce, established by Donald Trump via executive order, was part of a surge of federal law enforcement to Democratic-run cities he claimed were crime-ridden.

Details of the Shooting

Authorities said agents surrounded an Extended Stay America motel on Poplar Avenue, about 11 miles east of downtown Memphis, to support a DEA operation. A US Marshals Service spokesperson stated: "Federal and local law enforcement officers were attempting to serve a warrant on a wanted fugitive facing felony drug charges out of Shelby county. After issuing numerous verbal commands for the individual to surrender, officers made a forced entry into the building. Additional commands were given for the individual to exit. During the encounter, the individual pointed a handgun at members of the Memphis Safe Task Force. Taskforce members responded to the immediate threat by discharging their firearms."

Investigation and Context

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the shooting. The deceased has not been identified. All four taskforce deaths have occurred in the last two months. When Trump signed the order in September, Memphis had among the highest violent crime rates in the US, though violence had dropped sharply in the prior year as pandemic-era crime spikes subsided.

Previous Incidents

Early Monday, National Guard soldiers fatally shot 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson after Memphis police pursued him following reports of shots fired downtown. On May 21, taskforce officers killed 25-year-old Jonah Neal when responding to a report of an armed man threatening self-harm; a homeland security agent shot him. On May 13, agents shot and killed 41-year-old Darrin Pigram while serving an arrest warrant at a Burger King in Memphis's Frayser neighborhood.

Local Response

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, coordinating with Trump, activated the National Guard, which has patrolled Memphis for 10 months. Local activists have challenged the deployment in state and federal court without success.
