Driver Charged After Crash Kills 4-Year-Old Boy in Mawson

More than four months after a tragic crash that claimed the life of four-year-old Osal Mayur Pokhrel in south Canberra, authorities have confirmed that the driver involved has been charged and will appear in court this week.

Charges Laid in Fatal Mawson Crash

ACT Policing has charged an 80-year-old woman with negligent driving causing death and culpable driving causing death following the fatal incident at Mawson's Southlands Shopping Centre on January 18. The woman is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Family Seeks Future Protections

The young boy, along with his parents Prakash and Chura, were active members of the close-knit Bhutanese community in Canberra and Queanbeyan. Father Prakash Pokhrel expressed the family's hope that the legal process would bring meaningful change and enhance protections for others in the future.

"Nothing can bring him back," Mr. Pokhrel said. "We don't have anything to say about the charges ... we will just go with what the government is doing, and how the court will look into this matter. We are more concerned about the future, protections in the future."

Details of the Incident

On the morning of the crash, the couple had taken their son to offer prayers at a temple before heading to the Mawson shops for groceries. It is alleged that a subsequent crash involving a blue hatchback at the shopping centre caused the boy's death. Passers-by paid tribute to the four-year-old with flowers and toys at the site of the crash.

The case has drawn attention to road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of driving laws to prevent such tragedies. The court proceedings are expected to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
