ACT police are on the lookout for a ute driver who allegedly performed burnouts at a park in Deakin, causing significant damage to the turf. The incident took place on Sunday evening around 7:30 pm at a park near the corner of Denison Street and Hopetoun Circuit.
Witnesses Report Loud Engine Noises and Smoke
Several witnesses reported hearing loud engine revving and seeing a cloud of smoke rising from the park. Upon arrival, police found circular tire marks and deep ruts in the grass, indicating that a vehicle had been doing donuts or burnouts. The damage is estimated to be in the thousands of dollars, as the turf will need to be replaced.
Police Appeal for Information
ACT police have released a description of the vehicle: a white dual-cab ute, possibly a Toyota HiLux or similar model, with a black canopy. The driver is described as a man in his 20s or 30s with a beard, wearing a dark-colored shirt and shorts. Police are urging anyone with information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
“This kind of reckless behavior not only damages public property but also poses a safety risk to the community,” said a police spokesperson. “We are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information to contact Crime Stoppers.”
The park is a popular recreational area for families and dog walkers. The damage has left the turf unusable, and repairs are expected to take several weeks. The local council has been notified and will oversee the restoration.
Police are also reviewing nearby traffic cameras and speaking with residents in the area to gather more evidence. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference number 7311234.
