Wollongong City Council has paid tribute to two prominent figures in the local arts community following their recent deaths. At Monday night's council meeting, councillors acknowledged the passing of Bill Lever, owner of Lever's Framing and Art Supplies, and Ben Hession, a longtime host of the VOX Australian Music Show.
Lord Mayor Tania Brown led the tribute to Mr Lever, who died on November 2 at the age of 89. She noted that he and his wife Ann had operated the family business since 1955, growing it into the region's largest art materials supplier. The couple also supported numerous local charities, with Ann continuing to provide framing and art materials to schools and organisations.
Councillor David Brown then honoured Ben Hession, who died on January 1. Hession was described as a champion of the local music scene, giving many bands their start and supporting local venues. He was a longtime volunteer at 2Vox Community Radio, where he also trained technicians and presenters.
A public tribute for Hession is scheduled for March 14 at the University of Wollongong UniBar, starting at 3pm. Organisers are seeking expressions of interest from musicians, poets, comedians, and artists who wish to donate their time to honour his legacy. The event aims to thank Hession for his dedication and support of independent musicians in the region.
