Trump Claims Iran Peace Deal Near, Strait of Hormuz to Reopen

Donald Trump has announced that a deal with Iran to end the ongoing war is scheduled to be signed on Sunday, with the Strait of Hormuz opening to all international shipping immediately afterward. The former president made the claim on his Truth Social platform, stating that the agreement would prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and restore free passage through the strategic waterway.

Iranian officials expressed a more cautious timeline earlier on Saturday. Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the signing date had not yet been determined and would not occur on Sunday, but acknowledged that an agreement could be reached in the coming days. Both Washington and Tehran have shown increasing optimism that weeks of halting negotiations may be drawing to a close.

Trump’s post declared that Iran “no longer want a Nuclear Weapon, nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement.” Since an April 8 truce paused the worst of the fighting, Trump has repeatedly insisted a deal was near, only for negotiations to drag on.

In other news, Trump’s name has been removed from the facade of the Kennedy Center in Washington DC after a judge rejected an emergency appeal to block the removal. Meanwhile, former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized Trump’s plan to hold a UFC event on the White House lawn, calling the location inappropriate for mixed martial arts. The president is set to host seven fights on Sunday as part of his 80th birthday celebration.

Barbara McQuade’s new book likens Trump to Don Corleone, arguing he is eroding democracy by turning the US into a mafia state. Additionally, an elephant at the Texas Republican convention drew attention after urinating on the floor, raising animal welfare concerns.
