Mitch McConnell, the senior US senator from Kentucky, was hospitalized on Sunday morning, according to a statement from his spokesperson. The brief announcement said, "Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care." No further details were provided regarding his current condition or the reason for the admission, and a representative for McConnell did not respond to inquiries from the Guardian.
A Pattern of Health Concerns
In recent years, McConnell's health has been a subject of public concern, with multiple incidents raising questions about his ability to complete his Senate term, which runs until January 2027. The 84-year-old Republican leader was previously hospitalized for eight days in February after experiencing what his office described as "flu-like symptoms." He has also experienced episodes where he froze and became unresponsive during press conferences.
Since 2023, McConnell has suffered several falls. That year, he sustained a concussion and broken ribs after a fall at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington DC. Following that incident, he used a wheelchair, which a spokesperson said was "purely as a precautionary measure."
Reports indicate McConnell tripped and fell at least two more times in 2023. One fall occurred during an international trip to meet with then Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, and another happened while disembarking from a plane in Washington DC, a source told CNN at the time.
These health challenges have sparked ongoing speculation about McConnell's political future and whether he will seek reelection or retire before his term ends.
